Challenge coins are small military coins with the organization’s insignia or logo and carried by it’s members. They are usually given to prove membership when challenged and to also enhance the organizations morale. Challenge coins are also commonly collected by service members, and presented by unit commanders in recognition of special achievement by members of the unit. They are also exchanged between members in recognition of visits to an organization. Challenge coins have many finishes available. Pewter, gold, silver, nickel, brass, copper, bronze or antiqued variations. Soft or hard enamel or a printed inset with an epoxy coating may add color. Challenge coins are generally inexpensive to design and produce. There are two basic processes by which to manufacture. Zinc-alloy castings or die struck bronze. Besides using coins for challenging, they are also used as rewards or awards for outstanding service or performance of duty.
